The Washington National Wagner Society presents:
"How Elsa Showed Wagner the Way to ‘Siegfried’: the Influence of
‘Lohengrin’ on ‘The Ring of the Nibelung’"
Using a PowerPoint presentation, and clips from videotaped performances
of “Lohengrin” and “The Ring of the Nibelung,” Paul Heise will demonstrate
how the plot of the “Ring” is conceptually dependent on the philosophic
implications of the plot of “Lohengrin,” and resolves the main issues
broached in “Lohengrin.”
Paul Heise is an independent scholar, researcher, and lecturer who
has spent the past 30 years researching and analyzing all of Wagner’s
prose and musical compositions.
Paul currently sits on the board of directors of the Richard Wagner Society
of Tampa Bay, Florida. “How Elsa Showed Wagner the Way to ‘Siegfried’”
was first published in the May 1995 issue of WAGNER, the scholarly
publication of The Wagner Society (Great Britain). His presentation
on this topic to the Washington National Wagner Society is an expansion
of the original article and is a repeat of the talk he presented to the
Boston Wagner Society in December 2004. A review of his Boston presentation
may be found by visiting the Boston Wagner Society website:
http://www.bostonwagnersociety.org under "reviews."
Other publications include "The 'Ring' as a Whole," published both
by the Boston Wagner Society in four installments of their newsletter
WAGNERIANA, from summer of 2004 through winter of 2005 (it can be
accessed online at their website http://www.bostonwagnersociety.org,
under "articles"), and by the Wagner Society of Helsinki, Finland,
in German and Finnish translations, in the November 2004 and April 2005
issues of their magazine devoted to Wagner, GRANE.
The Washington National Wagner Society is a private non-profit organization
incorporated in Washington, DC in September 2004. It’s goals are to support
and develop special programs and projects which further the study, performance,
understanding, and enjoyment of Richard Wagner’s works.
